Euterpe YA Event: Character Interview with Tovi Taggert

Hey, you amazing bookworms! Welcome to the third stop on the Euterpe YA Event, hosted by us here at MYABL!

Since you're here, keep reading to learn more about 14 year old Tovi Taggert, of HL Carpenter's The SkyHorse.

We’re here today with Tovi Taggert. Tovi’s fourteen, and she’s starring in HL Carpenter’s young adult novel, The SkyHorse. Welcome to the blog, Tovi, and thanks for agreeing to an interview.

You’re welcome. Thanks for asking me.

Tell us about The SkyHorse.

The SkyHorse is the story of what happens after Mom and I move to Honeysuckle Hollow, Florida to live with Gramma. I’m walking home after a pretty crummy day at school, and I find a gorgeous egg - and a flying horse hatches out of it. And that’s just the start. I have to deal with a giant and a bunch of weird stuff.

What was the scariest moment for you?

OMG, there were so many times I was really scared. Like when the egg started hatching, and I didn’t know what to expect. And then, later, when I didn’t know how to help Zephyr - that’s the little flying horse. Oh, and when Mr. Nightingale -  he’s a real creep - when he threatened Gramma. That was probably when I was the most scared.

If you could change one decision, what would it be?

Umm, just one? I guess I would’ve told Mom about the Choking Game. That would’ve saved some trouble later.

How do you feel about the way things turned out?

I’m okay with it. I mean, I did what I had to do. I know that. But still...I hope maybe one day I can go to...but that’s probably not going to happen. I’m sort of...I don’t know the word...happy-sad, I guess is the best way to describe how I feel when I think about it.

What do you love most about the book?

I love the picture on the front, and I love that people are going to learn about flying horses. And I really love that the book is written as fiction. I mean, HL and Gramma and I know it’s all true, but everybody else is convinced it’s made up -  including Mom. That’s the best part, because I could be myself and tell what happened, and not have to worry about what anybody thinks. I just love the whole book, and I hope everybody who reads it loves it, too.

Thanks for hanging with us and getting to know Tovi! Keep reading to learn more about her creator, mother-daughter writing duo HL Carpenter!

BLURB:

When fourteen year old Tovi Taggert moves to Honeysuckle Hollow to take care of her grandmother, she has a hard time fitting in. For one thing, she’s been tagged with the hated nickname Too-Tall Tovi. For another, everyone at Honeysuckle Hollow High believes Tovi played the Choking Game with someone else’s boyfriend – and made out with him besides.

As if she doesn’t have enough problems, after the latest stand-off in the school hallway, Tovi finds a gorgeous speckled egg nestled in a feather lined nest.

She takes the egg home – and mysterious visitors begin appearing almost immediately. Even more worrisome, whatever is inside the egg starts chipping its way out.

When the egg hatches, revealing a winged horse, Tovi’s troubles multiply.

As she struggles to return the horse to the magical land where he belongs, Tovi must make a courageous decision – and accept what that decision will cost her.
